Gregory Bojorquez est ce qu’on appelle un photographe de rue. Diplômé en cinéma des Beaux Arts du Los Angeles Community College, il met son 35 mm au service des marges de sa ville. Personnalités hautes en couleur de son voisinage, stars du hip hop, groupes de jeunes, femmes à la plastique parfaite et fusillades de rue se côtoient  sous le soleil souvent cinglant de la Californie.

Sa pratique a commencé bien avant son diplôme: dès 1988, il s’intéresse aux oubliés – les sans abris et les vieillards en maison de retraite sont ses premières cibles. Découvert des années plus tard grâce à son travail sur le hip-hop underground du East L.A., il travaillera pour des magazines musicaux avant d’attirer l’attention de galeries et de collectionneurs. La beauté de ses clichés, instantanés du réel à l’état brut, n’est pas sans rappeler les travaux de Larry Clark ou de Zoe Strauss (dont on peut voir les clichés dans les murs du Philadelphia Museum of Art ou sur les panneaux d’affichage qu’elle a installés dans les rues de Philadelphie). Authentique et sincère, le photographe se voit plus comme un personnage faisant partie intégrante de l’oeuvre qu’il construit que comme un observateur distant, aseptisé – d’où ce sentiment de proximité exacerbé que l’on ressent face à ses modèles.

Les trois photographies suivantes furent prises durant une fusillade qui eut lieu le 9 décembre 2011 à l’intersection mondialement connue de Sunset Avenue et de Vine Avenue – c’est à dire en plein coeur du cliché hollywoodien. Gregory Bojorquez se trouvait là par hasard et, dans l’urgence du moment, a décidé de rendre compte de sa violence. « I think something like that needs to be seen. I snap photos of unique situations and people. » ¹

¹ « Je pense qu’un évènement comme celui-là a besoin d’être vu. Je prends des photos de gens et de situations uniques.«
